Fowler in the City: Day of the Ancestors

Celebrate memory, creativity, and community with the Fowler Museum and LA Commons at the annual Day of Ancestors Festival of Masks in Leimert Park Village. Honoring the rich cultural traditions of the African diaspora, this vibrant community festival uplifts ancestral remembrance through art, performance, music, and collective gathering.
As part of the day’s festivities, artist Maria Elena Cruz will lead the creation of a participatory community altar beginning at 12:00 PM. Visitors of all ages are invited to contribute artwork, written reflections, photographs, flowers, and other offerings in honor of loved ones and ancestors, helping shape a living, evolving installation rooted in remembrance, connection, and care.
The festival is free and open to the public and takes place from 12:00–6:00 PM.
