X91.86 Société La Croix (Sosyete Lakwa)

Artist: Yves Telemak (b. 1960, Port-au-Prince, Haiti)
Object Name: Soci-t- La Croix (Sosyete Lakwa), 1990s
Materials Used: Sequins, beads, synthetic pearls, fabric
Credit Line and Accession Number: Fowler Museum at UCLA, X91.86; Museum Purchase, Manus Fund

Although Telemak is best known for wildly polychromatic banners with abstract border patterns, this work exhibits a style more akin to older Vodou ceremonial flags (drapo sèvis) and emphasizes the primary symbolic marker of the divinities of the cemetery: the crucifix.
