Talk: Kathryn Gunsch, Altars and Ancestors in Benin
Elsewhere in Nigeria, most notably in the Benin kingdom, bronze sculpture is also used to honor the ancestors. Dr. Kathryn Gunsch will present a talk on how multi-media altars adorned with bronze commemorative heads, bronze sculptures and bells, and ornamented ivory tusks combine to both honor the ancestors and testify to a new king’s legitimacy.
Gunsch is Curator of African and Oceanic Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Co-presented by Ethnic Arts Council of Los Angeles.
