Summer Teacher Institute: Arts of Korea

This professional development course for K-12 teachers previews two fall exhibitions featuring Korean arts and artists, Korean Funerary Figures: Companions for the Journey to the Other World and Life in Ceramics: Five Contemporary Korean Artists.

Highlights of the institute include lectures by curators and UCLA scholars, field trips to Koreatown, an introduction to Korean cinema, a tea ceremony demonstration, a visit to a ceramics studio, and hands-on activities.

A binder of curricular materials will be provided.

LAUSD teachers may earn two salary point credits.

$75 registration fee.

Special Program: Uhengaparaoa Taonga Tuku Iho / Ancestral Gifts / Contemporary Māori Art

This gathering marks the opening of a collaborative exhibition that connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge of raranga (weaving) was shared across communities, the exhibition celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations. ...
