Special Event: The Art of Rangoli

August 14, 2019 | 12:30PM - 6:00PM

Artist-at-Work Viewing Times
Wednesday, August 14, 12-2PM
Thursday, August 15, 12-2PM

Rangoli is an art form in which patterns are meticulously drawn on the floor with bare fingers using rice flour, chalk, fine quartz powder, flower petals, grains, or other natural materials colored with vegetable dyes. This ritual skill is handed down from mother to daughter, and the patterns serve as an auspicious welcome intended to ward off evil. In celebration of Indian Independence Day on August 15, rangoli artists will create two site-specific designs at the Fowler—one indoors in the Goldenberg Galleria and one outdoors in the Davis Courtyard. The resulting designs will be on view during public Museum hours through Sunday, August 18.

The Art of Rangoli is presented by Malathi Iyengar, Suresh Iyengar, and Lakshmi Iyengar with the assistance of Vyshnavi Aysola and Ashley Starkey. The Rangoli Foundation for Art
