Lecture: Jerome Silbergeld on Chaekgeori (Korean Screen Painting)
THE 30TH SAMMY YUKUAN LEE LECTURE ON CHINESE ARCHAEOLOGY AND ART
Co-presented with the UCLA Center for Chinese Studies
Silbergeld examines the Korean genre of chaekgeori—multi-panel screen paintings depicting shelves of books, knickknacks, and other Western curiosities—and traces a historical sequence from 15th-century scholars’ studios to 17th-century Jesuits in China. Jerome Silbergeld is the P. Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Professor of Chinese Art History at Princeton University, emeritus and Former Director of Princeton’s Tang Center for East Asian Art. Reception to follow.
