High Noon Film Series: Best in the West

The Fowler’s summer High Noon Film Series is back! Directed by Maryam Kashani, Best in the West is a first person documentary focusing on the filmmaker’s father and his group of friends, who maintained their close bonds after emigrating from Iran to the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960s and ‘70s. Personal stories are interwoven with the political and industrial history of Iran in the last century.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Document: Iranian-American in L.A.

This gathering marks the opening of a collaborative exhibition that connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge of raranga (weaving) was shared across communities, the exhibition celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations. ...
