Fowler Out Loud: Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble

Members of this ensemble are selected by Herbie Hancock, Herb Alpert, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, Kenny Burrell, and James Newton, to study with legendary jazz artists in this full-scholarship graduate program at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Their program will feature original compositions inspired by exhibitions currently on view.

#FowlerOutLoud is an evening concert series that invites UCLA students from various disciplines to perform at the museum. Support for Fowler Out Loud comes from the UCLA Office of Residential Life.

Special Program: Uhengaparaoa Taonga Tuku Iho / Ancestral Gifts / Contemporary Māori Art

This gathering marks the opening of a collaborative exhibition that connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge of raranga (weaving) was shared across communities, the exhibition celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations. ...
