Fowler Out Loud: Mariachi de Uclatán

For more than 50 years, Mariachi de Uclatlán has produced talented musicians who have gone on to perform with world-renowned groups such as Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, Mariachi Sol de México, and Mariachi Reyna de Los Ángeles. Today Mariachi de Uclatlán continues to bring together talented musicians from diverse backgrounds in the spirit of the Golden Age of Mariachi music. For this popular annual show, expect some seasonal favorites to commemorate Día de los Muertos.

This gathering marks the opening of a collaborative exhibition that connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge of raranga (weaving) was shared across communities, the exhibition celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations. ...
