Fowler Out Loud: Balkanized: Songs and Compositions from the Black Sea

Formed by accomplished UCLA violinist Anna Kouchnerov, the Balkanized Ensemble explores traditional music of Asia Minor and the Balkans. Tonight’s program will include traditional Anatolian themes and new compositions written by members of the ensemble inspired by these ancient traditions centered around the Black Sea.

Special Program: Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art

This gathering marks the opening of a collaborative exhibition that connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge of raranga (weaving) was shared across communities, the exhibition celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations. ...
