Film Screening: New Beijing: Reinventing a City
August 3, 2016 | 7:30PM - 8:30PM
Director: Georgia Wallace-Crabbe, 2009, 52 minutes
The construction boom in Beijing produced architectural wonders including the National Stadium (Herzog & de Meuron), National Aquatics Center (PTW Architects), CCTV building (Rem Koolhaas), and National Theater (Paul Andreu). In creating this futuristic skyline, however, many of the city’s old neighborhoods and hutongs (narrow alleys) were sacrificed. Working with a Chinese crew, Australian filmmaker Georgia Wallace-Crabbe captures the dilemma that exists when development confronts preservation.
