Film Screening and Discussion: Waa’gey: Mysteries of the Wayfinding Voyagers
Director: Douglas Varchol, 2016, work in progress, approximately 60 minutes
Waa’gey follows a group of young men from the island of Lamotrek in the Federated States of Micronesia as they build a voyaging canoe and sail it 500 miles away to Guam using only traditional means of navigation. To call attention to the impact of rising sea levels on atoll dwellers throughout the Pacific, the handwoven sail displays a symbol intended to express hope and acknowledge resilience in the face of a changing climate. Following the screening, director Douglas Varchol and project leader Larry Raigetal will discuss the ongoing project and participate in a Q+A.
