Exhibition Walk-through: Textiles As Monument

Syona Puliady, curator of textiles, together with participating artists, will lead a special walk-through of Textiles as Monument, an exhibition that explores how textiles can serve as powerful vessels of memory, storytelling, and historical reimagining. This program offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from the curator and the artists as they discuss their newly commissioned pieces and the ideas behind them. The conversation will illuminate how these works function as “counter-monuments,” honoring intimate, everyday contexts and the ways touch, labor, and collaboration shape each piece. Together, they will provide deeper context for the exhibition’s themes while inviting audiences to reflect on the emotional, cultural, and sensory dimensions of textile-based practices.

Syona Puliady is curator of textiles of the Eastern Hemisphere at the Fowler. Her research focuses on histories and textiles of the Indian Ocean realm. Her work also takes her to the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, where she collaborates with artists and garment laborers who weave their identities into the Tamil landscape of visual, sensory, and performing arts.
