Dance Camera West Opening Night Shorts Program

The Dance Camera West Dance Film Festival showcases many forms of dance including modern, postmodern, world, tap, dance theater, ballet, hip-hop and practically all dance that has been captured on film in a way that is of quality and essential value. In this opening night event, a variety of shorts are showcased followed by a reception in the Fowler’s Art Council Amphitheatre. Special Program: Uhengaparaoa Taonga Tuku Iho / Ancestral Gifts / Contemporary Māori Art

This gathering marks the opening of a collaborative exhibition that connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge of raranga (weaving) was shared across communities, the exhibition celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations. ...
