Saroya Corbett is a UCLA World Arts and Cultures/Dance graduate student conducting research on bounce dance in New Orleans and majorette performance in Baton Rouge. In this gallery talk, Corbett incorporates Pableaux Johnson’s photographs of Second Line parades as she reflects on her recent fieldwork in New Orleans for Mardi Gras 2019.

Louisiana native Pableaux Johnson has been photographing Second Lines—or Sunday brass band parades—in New Orleans for over a decade. This exhibition presents more than 40 color portraits of members of African American Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs (SAPCs).
