Culture Fix: Curator Erica P. Jones on Nigeria at the British Empire Exhibition, 1924–1925
In 1924 the British Empire Exhibition opened to much fanfare in Wembley, England (a town in northwest London). The pavilions at the exhibition showcased the natural and industrial wealth of the British Empire. Beyond the extensive displays of agricultural and mineral goods, the Nigerian Pavilion also featured a showroom of arts and approximately 20 Nigerian artists who demonstrated their crafts daily to visitors. In this gallery talk Jones discusses the artists who lived and worked there and the journeys of several objects from the exhibition that ultimately entered the Fowler collection. One highlight is the model of the royal altar for Oba Ovonramwen from the Kingdom of Benin, made in the early 20th century.
