Artmaking in the courtyard 11 am–1 pm
Storytime 11:30 am and 12:30 pm

Be inspired by the ferocious lions, wise elephants, and graceful gazelles in the playful and colorful animal paintings of the Tingatinga exhibition! From 11 am to 1 pm, enjoy painting portraits of your favorite Safari animals. Learn about the leader of an elephant herd from a Fowler student educator who will read She Leads: The Elephant Matriarch by June Smalls in the courtyard at 11:30 am and 12:30 pm.

Parking available in UCLA Lot 4, 198 Westwood Plaza, directly off Sunset Blvd; $3/hr or max $14/day. Rideshare drop-off at 305 Royce Dr.

Special Program: Uhengaparaoa Taonga Tuku Iho / Ancestral Gifts / Contemporary Māori Art

This gathering marks the opening of a collaborative exhibition that connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge of raranga (weaving) was shared across communities, the exhibition celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations. ...
