Creativity in the Courtyard: Beading with Elegant Oricha

Join us for a kid-friendly beading workshop with artist duo Elegant Oricha! Learn about the importance of color and its connection to orishas or divinities. Be sure to visit our exhibition The House Was Too Small: Yoruba Sacred Arts from Africa and Beyond to see different styles of beadwork on display.

This program is funded by the Nissan Foundation. 

This Creativity in the Courtyard is a series of art-making events inspired by our exhibitions. recommended for ages 9–12 and open to all! 

Parking available in UCLA Lot 4, 198 Westwood Plaza, directly off Sunset Blvd; $3/hr or max $15/day. Rideshare drop-off at 305 Royce Dr.

Special Program: Uhengaparaoa Taonga Tuku Iho / Ancestral Gifts / Contemporary Māori Art

This gathering marks the opening of a collaborative exhibition that connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge of raranga (weaving) was shared across communities, the exhibition celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations. ...
