CANCELLED: Concert: Pan African Youth Orchestra
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
Led by Director Kwaku Kwakye, the Pan-African Youth Orchestra (PAYO) was established in 1995 “to explore the classical foundations of African music.” The orchestra is comprised of talented instrumentalists ages 6–17 from various schools across Accra, Ghana. Instruments are selected from diverse regions of the continent: atenteben flutes (seven-holed vertical bamboo flutes), gyle xylophones (anhemitonic pentatonic xylophones), and more. This summer PAYO ‘s tour brings them to Los Angeles to participate in Santa Monica Youth Orchestra’s “Opus 5”—a world arts and music summer camp for children ages 6–15. For their concert in the Fowler Amphitheater, PAYO presents a cross-cultural musical program, performed alongside the Santa Monica Youth Orchestra.
