Bringing Fabrics to Life: A Talk by Stephan Miescher on Akosombo Textiles Limited of Ghana

To celebrate the launch of our African-Print Fashion Now! exhibition catalog, contributing essayist Stephan Miescher discusses how the cloths made by Akosombo Textiles Limited of Ghana (ATL) evolved from a low prestige commodity to an affordable and respected product, now threatened by market liberalization and globalization. Miescher is Associate Professor of History at UC Santa Barbara.

Following the talk, stay for the African-Print Fashion Now! closing day celebration with a 3pm outdoor concert in the UCLA Art Council Amphitheatre.

This gathering marks the opening of a collaborative exhibition that connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge of raranga (weaving) was shared across communities, the exhibition celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations. ...
