Press: Reviving a Dyeing Technique, New York Times, 2014
Aboubakar Fofana is a calligrapher, artist, textile designer, and natural dyer specializing in indigo cloth using ancient techniques indigenous to West Africa. After years of study and practice in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Japan, he is now one of the world’s foremost practitioners of fermented indigo vat dyeing and mineral mud-dyeing techniques. From his atelier in Bamako, Mali, he regularly travels the world exhibiting his art and textiles, giving workshops and lectures, and collaborating with others who work to revitalize traditional processes and produce sustainable luxury goods.
In this talk, Fofana will discuss his practice, focusing on his inclusion in documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany and Athens, Greece this summer.
