Join us for an engaging conversation with artist and activist Preta Ferreira, whose work is featured in the exhibition Construction, Occupation. In dialogue with social practice artist and educator Cláudio Bueno, Ferreira will discuss her work with São Paulo’s housing rights movements. This conversation will bring together two dynamic voices in Brazilian contemporary art and social justice to explore how artistic practice and social movements can work together to create meaningful change in urban communities.

An audience Q&A will follow the discussion. All are invited to join us afterward for a reception.

Preta Ferreira
Janice Ferreira da Silva, known as Preta Ferreira, is an artist, writer, and activist who promotes access to housing and struggles against racism and social inequalities. She is an active member of organised movements for housing rights in the city of São Paulo, such as Movimento Sem Teto do Centro (Landless Movement of the Centre, MSTC) and Frente de Luta por Moradia (Struggle for Housing Front, FLM), of which her mother is a leader. Preta was the presenter of Boletim Lula Livre (Free Lula Bulletin), which reports on activities of the movement for the liberation of former president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva.

Cláudio Bueno
Claudio Bueno is an artist and curator from Sao Paulo, Brazil who mainly focuses on collective and communitarian art and cultural practices. He is an assistant professor in social design at the UCSC Art Department, teaching in the Environmental Art and Social Practice M.F.A. Bueno is also an affiliated professor of Visualizing Abolition Studies. He has engaged in several collective practices committed to social and environmental justice, such as “Explode! Platform”, “Intervalo-Escola,” and “O grupo inteiro.” Together with these groups, he has worked on collaborative, dialogical, and interdisciplinary political-aesthetic propositions, projects, and processes in art, design, education, activism, architecture, and technology. Bueno has a Ph.D. in visual arts from the University of Sao Paulo. In 2022, he served as director of participation and culture at Tomie Ohtake Institute, São Paulo. From 2019–21, he was a visiting professor at the graduate program of the School of Arts at Fundação Armando Álvarez Penteado.
