A Symposium on the Art of Myrlande Constant
IN PERSON
This free one-day symposium accompanies the Fowler exhibition Myrlande Constant: The Work of Radiance, the first major exhibition of a contemporary Haitian female artist. With the goal of bringing breadth and depth to Constant’s oeuvre and recognizing her impact on contemporary art, each speaker will focus on a single textile in the exhibition, highlighting such themes as race and representation, political resistance, labor, gender, and aesthetics.
The symposium is led by exhibition co-curators Jerry Philogene, associate professor of American studies at Dickinson College, PA, and Katherine Smith, Fowler curatorial and research associate of Haitian arts. Speakers will include Tiffany E. Barber, assistant professor of art history at UCLA; Myriam Chancy, Haitian-Canadian/American writer, Guggenheim fellow, and chair of the humanities at Scripps College; Kyrah Malika Daniels, assistant professor of African American studies at Emory University; Elizabeth DeLoughrey, professor of English with an appointment in the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA; Mamyrah Dougé-Prosper, activist and assistant professor of global and international studies at UC Irvine; Patrick A. Polk, senior curator of Latin American and Caribbean popular arts at the Fowler Museum; and ad Gina Athena Ulysse, professor of feminist studies at UC Santa Cruz. The schedule will allow ample time to view and discuss works in the galleries.
